(Los Angeles) The 5th Annual Central American International Film Festival (CAIFF ) is taking place at Margo Albert Theatre en la Plaza de la Raza 3540 North Mission Road, Los Angeles from December 6 through 8, 2019. This three days event features award-winning Latin American films that have been selected to represent their countries.
Byron Brizuela, Director of the Central American International Film Festival, says that the event seeks to promote the talent and potential of the region’s motion picture industry with documentaries and fiction productions from Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama. Each year the Festival shows the productions of a guest country. For this year, El Caribe was chosen.
The initiative is to spread the work done by filmmakers, videographers and documentaries. “The Festival is a window to showcase the talent of Central American cinema.”
Brizuela highlights that the International Central American Film Festival is an opportunity to showcase the history, culture, and art of the region to the world.
“We have to show the production of films, documentaries, and short films, they allow us to show the world our stories,” Brizuela has emphasized.
“Central America has to work to publicize our realities and stories through the cinema as they have done other nations such as Israel. Multiple films the Jewish holocaust has been addressed. Through the cinema the world has known about that part of its history”, says Director of the Central American International Film Festival.
The diffusion of the culture and our Mesoamerican roots are shown in the documentary “El Ultimo Tlatoni” by Pablo Jato that addresses the history of the last emperor of the Aztec empire killed by the Spanish conqueror Hernán Cortés. While the production “Esta es tu Cuba” recounts the problem of Cuban immigration to the United States during the coming to power of Fidel Castro, where 14 thousand children took a flight without their parents to the US in search of a better life.
The quality of the participating productions is of a high level, for example “Esta es tu Cuba” it has been nominated in the BAFTA in the Best Student Film Award category, it has the following awards and won the HBO Ibero-American Short Film Award at the Festival Film Festival, Student Emmy (College Television Award) for Best Drama, LA Shorts Film Festival as Best of the Fest Award, American Film Pavilion at Cannes for Best Student Film, WindRider @ Sundance for Best Student Film.
For example, We are All Oscar was part of the official selection of Beverly Hills 19th Film Festival, Canada International Film Festival, Lift off Global Network Tokyo among other prestigious audiovisual competitions.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says that Central America’s filmmaking is experiencing a boom, earning a place in the world’s top silver screen circles and festivals. Between 2013-2015, the region produced 113 national motion pictures—more than the number of productions of the past century.
